Australian Honey in the Spotlight

You may have heard a few stories about Australian honey over the past 48 hours. If not, let’s briefly recap the events that have lead to this reporting:

  • An international science laboratory that specialises in honey fraud, Eurofins Analytics, investigates honey composition using the Nuclear Magnetic Resolution Test (NMR). This tests for impurities and honey adulteration with other sugars and liquid sweeteners.

  • Eurofins Analytics discover that almost half of the investigated Australian supermarket honeys have been adultered and modified. (Adultered honey contains sugary syrups other than pure honey from bees)

  • ABC reports that all adultered honeys contain Australian AND imported honey. Capilano Honey is one of the brands implicated in combining international/ imported honey with Australian honey.

  • The international science lab also tested IGA Black and Gold private label honey, two of six Aldi Bramwell’s prviate labels and six of the eight Capilano’s Allowrie budget branded bottled honey.

  • Capilano Honey denies the claim and states the testing procedure is inadequate.

  • Woolworths announces product labelling accuracy is taken very seriously.

  • Aldi removes certain honey varieties from its shelves as a precaution.

  • Media seeks industry opinions

Mr Phil McCabe from the International Federation of Beekeepers’ states that the NMR test is the most accurate. He also believes that consumers are not getting what they paid for.

For your information, honey tampering is not a new phenomenon. In 2014 The ACCC fined Bera Foods and issued three infringement notices to Victoria Honey over honey labels that did not contain honey in its true form.

Living Pure acknowledges that the recent events into honey tampering may reduce consumers trust in the industry. However, this is where Living Pure stands apart. We are transparent in all of our manufacture and ingredients. We source locally the highest quality, we believe anything less is simply not good enough.

Living Pure Australia is proud of the origins of our honey varieties. We do not add any nasties or unnatural and processed ingredients, such as additives, preservatives, cheap sugar syrups and other sweetening agents. Nor do we blend our Living Pure honey with other cheaper and lesser quality honeys.

All of our honeys are sourced from the pristine forests just outside South Eastern Australia where there is fresh clean air. There are no pesticides, herbicides, genetically modified or nearby pollution. Our Living Pure honeys are also untreated, as are the honey bees and hives that our honey comes from. So you can be confident the goodness and purity of the honey is respected through the entire honey process; from honey bees right through to your purchases.

Every pot or jar of Living Pure honey has our seal of approval. Our beautifully aromatic Eucalyptus honey, delectable honeycomb and all of the Living Pure Manuka Honeys undergo stringent quality control so what we claim our products to be, are what they truly are.
